Produce and perishables
South Florida is a produce market before it is anything else, and reefer freight out of here behaves differently from reefer freight anywhere else in the country.
What this freight actually demands
Three things that decide whether it goes well
Receivers reject on paperwork
A produce receiver can reject a load on the temperature download alone, before anyone opens a box. The download is read against the setpoint on the rate confirmation, which is why we insist on agreeing it in writing.
Pre-cool does not chill product
Product must be loaded at temperature. The reefer holds, it does not cool. Warm product loaded into a cold trailer arrives warm and gets rejected.
Season moves the market
Capacity out of South Florida tightens hard in season and rates follow. We will tell you early when a lane is going to be expensive rather than repricing you the day before pickup.
| Primary equipment | Refrigerated van |
|---|---|
| Typical service | Temperature controlled, occasionally expedited |
| Mode | Continuous run for most fresh produce |
| Documentation | Temperature download available on request |
What we need at tender
The commodity, the setpoint and tolerance, whether the receiver has its own stricter standard, and the pack. Berries, leafy greens and citrus do not behave the same way and the carriers who handle them well are not always the same carriers.
Claims
Produce claims turn on documentation more than on argument. Agreed setpoint, download, pulp temperatures at both ends, and a clean bill of lading. We would rather build that file on every load than assemble it after a rejection.
